Intent
At Barrington Primary School, we aim to provide our pupils with a high quality mathematical education, through our maths mastery approach, equipping them with the key skills and conceptual understanding needed to reason and become problem solvers.
We aim to:
- Foster a love of mathematics and an understanding of the importance of mathematics in their lives
- Develop pupils’ fluency so they can apply their mathematical knowledge to a range of problems
- Develop key skills as they move through the school
- Develop pupils’ ability to reason and problem solve in a range of situations, particularly relating to the wider world
- Develop pupils’ independence and creating a culture of risk taking in all classrooms
Implementation
From Reception to Year 6 we follow the White Rose small steps for learning which are implemented using both the White Rose planning and the Mastering the Curriculum planning. Teaching is also supplemented by other resources that are deemed relevant by the class teacher.
In addition to a daily Maths lesson, all classes have three 10-minute Maths Meets every week. These revisit prior learning on a regular basis and address misconceptions. In some classes, these are taught through the using of the 'Mastering Number' materials.
Pre and post teaching is used by both the class teacher and teaching assistant in a class when necessary for identified pupils.

Assessment
At the end of key stage 2, children are assessed on arithmetic and reasoning through Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs).
It is for this reason that the mastery approach we use is not just focused on calculation skills but also on understanding, reasoning and applying through problem-solving. In addition, regular assessment enables teachers to assess attainment against age related expectations and informs individual targets.

Times Tables
A rapid and accurate recall of multiplication and division facts boosts children's fluency and their mathematical confidence and is in line with the mastery philosophy.
We use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) to help the children learn and rehearse their times tables. All children in KS2 are given 20 minutes per week in school to use TTRS and are also encouraged to play at home too. There are graduated levels of certificates that the children can earn; these are given out in our celebration assembly when they are achieved.
There is now a Multiplication Check for pupils at the end of Year 4.
