Music

Music

Our Subject Leader for Music is Mrs Clark

Intent

We aim to develop a love of music in both its appreciation and its creation.

At Barrington we provide all children with accessible music lessons and provisions; this supports every child's creative development.   We encourage children to develop and extend their performing, composing, appraising and listening skills through the teaching of music by our specialist teacher.

Through our music curriculum we aim to:

  • help pupils of all abilities develop positive attitudes and to experience success and satisfaction in music
  • provide every child with the opportunity to experience enjoyment through a range of musical activities and to respond to musical 'emotions'
  • develop social skills through co-operation with others and shared experience of music making
  • develop an understanding of musical traditions and enhance performance skills by learning and performing music from a variety of cultures
  • know and understand how sounds are made and the n organise them into musical structures
  • know how music is made through a variety of instruments
  • know how music is composed and notated down
  • know how music is influenced by the time, place and purpose for which it is written
  • develop the inter-related skills of music, focusing on listening, appraising, performing and composing

Implementation

In support of this, we seek to ensure that pupils develop an ability to read musical notation and use this while playing a variety of instruments with increasing competence and a growing self-confidence; this is in addition to the development of the child’s voice as an instrument.

In addition, we ensure pupils understand the vocabulary of music (tempo, timbre and pitch) and are able to use this to discuss and appreciate a range of noteworthy musical pieces throughout history. Learning progresses through listening to and appraising a variety of genre, creating and exploring music and performing in different contexts. Learning about the same concept through diverse activities over time enables the children to gain a secure, deeper mastery of musical skills.

We seek to enable the children to build up a solid knowledge of traditional songs from the UK and wider world as well as those with content that reflects our core values. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music within our local community and within British culture.

Impact

The quality of learning in Music is evaluated through reflecting, rewinding and replaying key skills at the end of each year.  Each unit of work is assessed by the music specialist to establish the success of taught subject knowledge.  Lesson observations and pupil voice also help us to evaluate the attainment and engagement in music lessons.  Children's understanding is demonstrated by class performances, instrumental practise and compositions.  Achievement in music is celebrated through a yearly show to parents, class assemblies and acknowledgement of medals/exams attained by individual pupils.
