SMSC
PSHE - Personal, Social, Health and Econonic education
Intent
At Barrington, our intent is to deliver a PSHE curriculum which:
- Develops the knowledge, skills and attributes our children need to manage life’s challenges and make the most of life’s opportunities.
- Enables our children to play a positive role in our society, now and as an adult.
- Provides local, national and global understanding of their world so that they can appreciate being part of a diverse society.
- Promotes our status as a Rights Respecting School where our children understand their rights and those of others.
- Incorporates British Values so that our children feel confident to use their voice to influence decision making and encourage respect and equality.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development
At Barrington Primary School, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is actively promoted within the curriculum but also through the ethos of the school and through the development of positive values and attitudes.
We aim to:
- lead pupils towards becoming confident and positive contributors to their community
- enable pupils to gain insights into the origins and practices of our culture and those of the wider community
- take steps to ensure that pupils appreciate racial and cultural diversity and avoid and resist racism
Health and Sex Education
The various elements of Health Education (e.g. healthy eating, personal hygiene, road safety) are covered in several areas of the curriculum as well as through the personal and social development of the children throughout their school life.
Citizenship
Throughout the school, issues of citizenship are raised and discussed with the children.
These include the family, the citizen and the law, community and democracy, and a pluralist society. We believe these to be issues as relevant to our children as they are to society as a whole and vital if they are to grow and mature into responsible and caring adults.
Our children are encouraged to experience community co-operation in school and to be aware of the less privileged members of the community. Fundraising, for charities selected by the School Council, is undertaken throughout the school year.
We have an active Eco Committee who are keen to promote respect for our environment. During the year they present assemblies on subjects like World Water Day and organise competitions for pupils to enter.
How SMSC is linked to the Maths Curriculum
SMSC is integral to the teaching and learning process.
At Barrington, we ensure that these aspects are not taught explicitly but embedded into every learning opportunity.
We ensure that our children have opportunities to:
- Work as part of a team
- Learn to use and apply their knowledge of Mathematics in the 'real world'
- Become financially literate
- Be aware of how number systems in different cultures differ
- Be aware of the history of number and how it has changed over time.
- Create awe and wonder
Personalised learning
We are a Rights Respecting School - United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child - Article 29
Children's education should develop each child's personality, talents and abilities to the fullest.
At Barrington we ensure that learning is personalised to each and every child. Approaches to learning in maths include access to physical resources (such as place value counters, bead strings or dienes blocks), visual aids (such as number lines, 10-frames or bar models) as well as abstract concepts (number). All these methods are available to all children, regardless of their level of ability. Practise questions and imagery are carefully varied in order to avoid mechanical repetition and encourage thinking.
Adult-led interventions are targeted towards specific children to consolidate learning, address misconceptions or deepen understanding according to the individual's differing needs. Some children receive additional support to focus on a particular area of maths through their own Special Educational Needs support plan.
