Our Subject Leader for Spanish is Miss J Haycock

Intent

Modern Foreign Languages at Barrington Primary School.

At Barrington Primary School, we teach Spanish.

Our intent for the MFL curriculum is to allow children to develop an interest in learning other languages in an enjoyable and stimulating manner which is inclusive of every child. We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries. In doing this, we open up opportunities for our pupils in later life across the globe and help them become forward-thinking individuals who understand the world outside of their home town.

Our aim is to embed the listening, reading, speaking and writing skills necessary to enable children to use and apply their Spanish learning in a variety of contexts, laying the foundations for future language learning at secondary school. These skills then support all children in all curricular subjects with their listening and communication skills.

We provide opportunities for communication for practical purposes, which in turn provides a foundation for learning further languages and equips pupils to study and work in other countries. By progressively growing children’s vocabulary and grammatical knowledge through Key Stage Two, we intend for our children to be confident, independent Spanish speakers and learners.

Implementation

We base the teaching of Spanish on the 2014 National Curriculum; it is delivered using the 'Language Angels' scheme of work.  We have adapted the lessons to the context of our school.  This provides teachers with clear progression grids and content for teaching and learning.  The curriculum has a focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; as well as making children aware of grammatical features of the Spanish language.

Language Angels uses a variety of the following techniques to encourage children to actively engage with the Spanish language:

  • Games - in order to develop vocabulary through repetition, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
  • Role play - these should relate to situations the children may find themselves in in the future
  • Action songs and Rhymes - to develop phonetic skills, memory skills and to further understanding of vocabulary
  • Quality reading and writing materials

Confidence is built through praise for any contribution they make in the Spanish language however tentative.

Teachers follow sequences of lessons from the scheme of work, covering a wide range of topics and themes.  Weekly lessons are taught and ensure progression by building on previous learning.  Previous language is revised, recalled and consolidated whenever possible and when appropriate.  Evidence of learning is captured using cameras to record pupils speaking Spanish in addition to the work in the children's Spanish books; the books move with the child from Year 3 through to Year 6 so that previous learning is accessible for all.  Pupils will continuously build on their prior knowledge as they progress on their language learning  journey.  Lessons are adapted where appropriate to provide a suitable level of support and challenge.

Impact

Our MFL curriculum ensures that all pupils develop key language learning skills set out by the National Curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures.

The subject leader monitors the effectiveness of the language teaching provided throughout the year with book looks, learning walks and pupil voice.  Class teachers will monitor the learning and progression made by pupils across the Key Stage.

Learning an additional language will offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences.  It is hoped that our children will foster a love of languages  and a desire to further their learning beyond the classroom and in their future.
