Art and Design at Barrington Primary School

Intent

At Barrington we believe that art is a vital and integral part of children’s education.

It provides them with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links with a wide spectrum of different types of art in our society.

At Barrington we aim to foster creativity, self expression and provide a well-rounded education that encourages artistic exploration, cultural appreciation and critical thinking whilst nurturing pupils' imagination and confidence.

We are dedicated to providing an enriching artistic experience that embraces all pupils, of all abilities including those with additional needs/Special Educational Needs.

Implementation

We will incorporate a variety of art forms such as drawing, painting, working in 3 dimensions and mixed media into the curriculum,  The curriculum also includes hands-on activities, art history and  exposure to diverse art styles and artists.   There are multiple opportunities  for pupils to rehearse artistic techniques and create their own artwork.

Impact

Art and Design at Barrington will enhance pupils' cognitive abilities by promoting problem solving skills, spatial awareness and attention to detail.  It will also support emotional and social development by providing a medium for self expression, encouraging collaboration, fostering empathy and cultural understanding.  It will boost self esteem and self confidence as pupils gain a sense of accomplishment through their artistic achievements.  By nurturing creativity and visual literacy skills, Art and Design at Barrington will empower pupils to become lifelong learners and promote an appreciation for the arts in their communities regardless of their unique learning abilities.

At Barrington we recognise the significance of sketchbooks as invaluable tools for nurturing creativity and artistic growth.  Our commitment to fostering a deep appreciation for art begins with providing pupils with sketchbooks as an essential canvas for their imagination.

Through their lessons and school trips, in local and national competitions we aim to give pupils a broad creative experience which will expand their artistic and cultural horizons and so ensure they have a rounded educational experience.

Design and Technology at Barrington Primary School

Our Subject Leader for Design and Technology is Ms J Lacey

Intent

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject that encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems, both as individuals and as members of a team in an increasingly technological world.

At Barrington we aim to foster creativity, problem solving skills and empathy for all our pupils including those with additional needs/Special Educational Needs.

Implementation

Design and Technology will be integrated into our school curriculum, incorporating interactive activities, project based learning and collaboration.  Pupils will be guided through the DT process; this includes identifying real world problems, brainstorming ideas, prototyping solutions and testing and refining their designs.

Impact

At Barrington Primary School, pupils will develop essential 21st Century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.  They will learn to approach problems with a human-centered mindset, gaining empathy and understanding for others.  The impact will be visible in pupil' ability to think innovatively, develop unique solutions and adapt to a rapidly changing world.  Design and Technology at Barrington Primary School will empower all pupils to become life long learners and problem solvers, preparing them for future challenges and opportunities.

We aim, wherever possible, to link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. This gives the learning purpose and relevance to the children.

History at Barrington Primary School

Our Subject Leader for History is Miss E Taylor

Intent

At Barrington, we aim to inspire pupils to be curious and creative thinkers, who develop a complex knowledge of both local and national history and history of the wiser world.  Our pupils will develop their confidence, through the history curriculum, to become critical thinkers who ask pertinent questions and are able to explain and analyse historical evidence.

Implementation

At Barrington, we have carefully selected the Kapow scheme of work, to implement our History curriculum.  Our curriculum has been designed to be varied, engaging and hands on; it will enrich learning experiences allowing pupils to investigate history as historians do.  It has been designed to continue to build upon previous learning to ensure progression across each topic and year group.  At the beginning of each new topic, the pupils will continue to have opportunities to revise and embed their previous learning of History.

Pupils at Barrington will begin to develop their understanding of history in EYFS through discussion about their own lives and people that are important to them; ordering events in their own life over time.  They will be exposed to hands on experiences such as visiting the local area and looking at what it was like in the past and now.

In Key Stage One, pupils will further develop their awareness of the past and will know where people and events fit chronologically.  This will support pupils in building a 'mental timetable' which they can refer to throughout their learning in Key Stage Two and identify connections, contrasts and trends over time.

Impact

At Barrington, we will continue to monitor and assess the impact of our history curriculum through regular assessment opportunities  within lessons as well as skill catcher assessment task and quizzes at the end of each topic.  At the end of Key Stage Two, pupils at Barrington will be enquiring learners who can ask questions and use evidence to respond to historical enquiry questions.  All pupil will have an excellent bank of historical vocabulary and terminology which will have been embedded through each of the history topics taught.

Pupils will leave Barrington with a range of skills to continue to develop their history learning and continue to be successful in their secondary education.  Pupils of Barrington will be critical and analytical thinkers who are able to make informed and balanced judgements based on their knowledge of the past.

Geography at Barrington Primary School

Our Subject Leader for Geography is Miss E Taylor

At Barrington, we shape our Geography curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography, providing a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge and skills.

Intent

Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We provide exciting opportunities to spark a love of geographical learning; our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about places and people, the environment, physical and human processes and use of landscapes. We want children to develop a deeper understanding of places both on a local and global scale.

Through high quality teaching, children will develop the following essential characteristics of a geographer:

  • An excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain and the wider world.
  • An extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
  • The ability to express well- balanced opinions, rooted in good knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment.
  • A genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity and the world.

We want children to enjoy and love learning about Geography, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.
